Lists of Things

Lists can be funny. Here is a collection of some funny list recitations starting with a classic from Dr. Strangelove and the “Shrimp List” from Forest Gump. Keep letting me know what other ones are out there that I should add (this list is getting longer by the day).

Dr. Andrew SyderBenoit Doidic, Benton Jew and Rebecca Leckman have contributed multiple titles for addition to the list.

From Russia With Love (1963) – Back when 007 payed close attention during Q briefings.

Dr. Strangelove (1964) – Survival kit contents check.

Goldfinger (1964) – The first proper spy car.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966) – Dude’s name is even a list!

I know what you are thinking. That list would make a great bridge in a Big Audio Dynamite song. Yes, yes it would

“The Spanish Inquisition” from Monty Python’s Flying Circus (1970) – I bet you weren’t expecting to see this clip on this list.

“The Cheese Shop” from Monty Python’s Flying Circus (1972) – An entire sketch made up of a list (and the word ‘no’). Oh and there is a guide to the cheeses mentioned over on Wikipedia.

Blazing Saddles (1974) – All one take! Harvey Korman is perfection here, even turning beet red by the end of the shot. Makes Mark Wahlberg’s obvious cue card reading in Ted, even sadder by comparison.

A Boy and his Dog (1975) – A future history lesson. “Kennedy, Kennedy, Kennedy…”

Damien: Omen II (1978) – Don’t mess with the devil, you’ll get the horns.

The Jerk  (1979) – And this paddle toy…

The Blues Brothers (1980) – Frank Oz reciting a list of personal effects.

An American Werewolf in London (1981) – Two John Landis lists in a row!

The Terminator (1984) – “Hey, just what you see, pal.”

Repo Man (1984) – It takes a while for Bud to get the whole list out.

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (1985) – I think you can lift weights.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) – This first Ferris Bueller list is on the screen!

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) – “Bueller? Beuller?”

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) – Three lists in one movie!

Ghostbusters (1986) – Vince let’s us know what we might be in for.

Raising Arizona (1987) – “You ate sand?”

Rain Man (1988) – The list that was edited by all airlines when Rain Man was screened in-flight. Well, all airlines but one.

Slacker (1991) – I think this list could have gone on for 90 minutes.

The Simpsons “Treehouse of Horror III” (1992) – Sodium benzoate!

Forrest Gump (1994) – Ways to Eat Shrimp

Clerks (1994) – Kevin Smith’s epic list of 1990s porn video titles (NSFW)

The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) – The Wacky Circumference!

Apollo 13 (1995) – Ok to go!

Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy (1996) – “I offer you these things, but they will be yours anyway.”

Waiting for Guffman (1996) – Things at “The DQ”

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) – Reinterprets the Blues Brothers list but takes it way too far.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) – “…that makes miniature models…of factories.”

The Fifth Element (1997) – Zorg? What a lazy sci-fi name.

Fight Club (1999) – Tyler lays it out.

The Cider House Rules (1999) – The Cider House Rules.

Best in Show (2000) – Types of Nuts

Wonderboys (2000) – Another suicide list.

  1. Ooo I know! Lists of Tea flavors: Scott Pilgrim VS The World

“What kind of tea do you want?”
    “There’s more than one kinda?”
“We have.. Blueberry, Raspberry, Jensen, Sleepy time, Green Tea, Green Tea with lemon, Green tea with lemon and honey, Liver disaster(?), Ginger with honey, Ginger without honey, Vanilla honey, White truffle, Blueberry caramel, Vanilla walnut, Constant Comic, annnd.. Earl grey.”
“Did you make some of those up?”
“I think I’ll have sleepy time”
    “That sounds good to me.”

  2. Awesome addition! How did I forget that one?

  3. This PROVES you have a lot in common with Toby McGuire in Wonder Boys . . . EXCEPT. . . You did not list these in all alphabetical order.

  4. I guess I just think chronologically. 🙂

  5. It’s a short and sad list, and in this way it adds to the narrative, but how about the list of the only things Navin Johnson needs, to leave.

  6. OK. One more suggestion… From Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the list of conditions from the King of the Swamp to the guards regarding Prince Herbert.

    • Upon reconsideration, perhaps this list (Monty Python and the Holy Grail) has more in common with “Who’s on First” than the above List of Lists…

  7. Ok, sorry I got to this thread so late! How about Hedley Lamarr’s List of Villians needed to rid the town of Rockridge of it’s citizens from “Blazing Saddles”.
