I was asked to put together some lectures on lighting for the Clone Wars lighting team, and this week I deliver the second in the series.
It’s been really nice that this talk is confined to Film Noir Lighting. I don’t really have to get into all of the history, scholarship and academic minutiae I usually cover. I don’t have to worry about showing examples that fall outside the accepted dates for the genre/movement. I don’t have to provide historic context about the post-war existential crisis in America. All I have to do is show examples of Noir-style lighting and discuss why it qualifies as such to me. And the clips themselves do most of that work!
The biggest challenge for me is that I only have the lighting team for one hour a week. If you’ve been to one of my classes or lectures, you will understand how hard this is for me. Here are the films I’m trying to cram in:
